How Safe is the Food We Eat?

We often hear and read that there are substances in our food that are harmful or that can make us sick. But is that actually the case? Can our food contain substances that cause cancer?

Strict control over our food

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is an organization of the European Union that provides independent advice on food safety. They do this on the basis of scientific research. These recommendations form the basis of European rules and laws in the field of food safety.

In the Netherlands, the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) monitors food safety. They also check whether the laws regarding food safety are being complied with. The NVWA looks at both harmful substances in our food and pathogens such as bad bacteria. If a product is not safe, the NVWA will remove the product from the store.

In recent years, products have been regularly removed from the store. This shows that the safety of our food is taken into account. In addition, the ways to check that products are safe are getting better and better. As a result, harmful substances are noticed earlier. You can therefore assume that everything is done to ensure that the food you buy in the store is safe.

Important role for the liver

Each product can contain both good and less good substances. It is therefore important to vary your food and drink. The less good substances are only harmful in a certain amount. This amount differs per fabric, but also depends, for example, on the size of your body.

Your body has a number of ways to neutralize less beneficial substances. This will cause liver failure. Subsequently, the substance is removed from your body through your urine or feces.

Example: heavy metals in fatty fish
Fatty fish contain healthy fatty acids, which are important for our brains, among other things. But fatty fish can also contain heavy metals. That is why the advice is not to eat fatty fish more than once a week, then it is safe.

Example: nitrite in green vegetables
Green vegetables are very healthy because they contain a lot of vitamins, minerals and fiber. But green vegetables also contain nitrate, which is converted by the body into nitrite. If we ingest too much nitrite, this increases the risk of cancer. When eating normal portions of green vegetables (about 250 grams of vegetables per day) you do not consume dangerous amounts.

The health benefits of eating fatty fish and green vegetables far outweigh the potential risks in these examples.

Nowadays you need to make sure what is mixed in your food, whether it is safe or not, like ‘Comment Wayfaircard‘ here you can see the latest reviews about Food.

How Can Your Children Eat Better

TIPS FOR DIETARY EDUCATION FOR YOUR CHILD

Don’t punish your child if he doesn’t finish his plate
Punishment can cause aversion: your child associates a negative feeling with healthy eating. Something that is precisely not the intention. Also, don’t turn it into a circus by applauding when your toddler takes a bite of his food. Teach your child that eating their food is normal.

Let your child control how much he eats
It is okay if your child eats a little worse for a while. In fact, it is almost to be expected as soon as the word ‘no’ appears in the toddler phase. By forcing food on your child, he learns not to listen to his feeling of fullness. Something that is important and can prevent obesity in the future .

Small portions on a divided plate
A board with boxes can also help. And one by one empty a compartment or alternately eating something from each compartment, how nice is that! Let your child also brag for himself. And is your child still hungry afterwards? Then he can get some more.

Eat and drink at regular times
Have breakfast, lunch and a warm meal. It is precisely these three fixed eating moments that ensure that your child does not want to eat and drink all day long. Of course, an occasional snack is not a bad thing. But stick to a maximum of four times and preferably not just before eating.

Prohibition is counterproductive, borders do not
If you want to do something and it is absolutely not allowed, you do it anyway. Prohibiting candy and biscuits is often counterproductive. Exercising a certain degree of control is important.

Together at the table!
Eating together at the table is good for your child’s health and development. It is also good for the language development of small children. Yet for busy families it appears to be a challenge to find time to eat together.

No TV, cell phone or iPad
It is already difficult for adults to focus when the television is on or a tablet is on the table, let alone for stimulus-sensitive children. Eat with attention yourself and give your child attention while eating.

Good example is good to follow
Your child looks at your behavior; what and when you eat. If you eat all day long, chances are that your child will find it normal and will soon do so.

Help, watch and learn
Peel an egg, wash vegetables and fruit or spread bread. These are all ways to get your child engaged with food in a good way. If he has made a meal with you, then he probably wants to taste and eat it himself.

Don’t use food as a comfort or reward
If you do teach this, your child may later comfort or reward himself with food. And that in turn can lead to obesity. Prefer to play or dance with your child, read a book, sing a song. And cuddling together always works.

Also, don’t reward your child with other food, such as dessert, when he eats his vegetables. Your child may then start to think that vegetables are actually not tasty. And even if he doesn’t eat all of his vegetables, just have dessert as part of the meal. You can of course compliment or gift your child a ‘ stuff he we will really like ‘ if he has eaten his fruit or vegetables.

WHAT YOU SHOULD EAT EVERY DAY

Variety is one of the most important rules of a balanced diet. And it’s not that hard when you’re looking at the food pyramid. It reveals which foods should be on the table and how often.

Many people choose to eat a balanced diet. They want to get more energy and prevent diseases by changing their eating habits. But what does it actually mean to eat a “healthy” diet? The food pyramid of the Federal Centre for Nutrition offers a good orientation.

What is balanced diet?

A balanced diet aims to provide our body with all the essential nutrients. The right balance between the different foods is crucial for this. Ideally, three-quarters are plant-based: fruits and vegetables usually have few calories, but provide numerous vitamins and minerals. The animal content should be smaller but still available to meet the need for protein and fat. Carbohydrates may also be included.

The BZfE advises more variety on the plate. This means, for example, not just bananas or apples, but the whole colorful and diverse range of fruits and vegetables. In addition, the choice should be sustainable in order to protect the environment and, ultimately, the health of us human beings. The motto is therefore “regional and seasonal”: food that comes from the region and does not need to be imported by farmers, spares the climate and even often tastes better.

The food pyramid

In the food pyramid, the BZfE groups food in eight groups and on six levels. Symbols and traffic light colors make it easier for users to find out at a glance which foods should end up on the plate frequently and which are less likely to end up on the plate if you want to eat a balanced diet. Each building block also stands for a portion that everyone can measure with their own hand.

DRINKS

Drinks are the basis with six portions – that is, we should drink six glasses (equivalent to 1.5 liters) per day. Water and unsweetened herbal or fruit teas are best suited here. Also coffee (important: without milk and sugar), black or green tea are included. Cola or sodas, on the other hand, have too high a sugar and also calorie content and therefore count more as sweets. Milk and cocoa also do not fall into the category of “drinks”.

VEGETABLES, SALAD AND FRUIT

Three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit a day make a good mix for a balanced diet – with many healthy nutrients. You can also exchange a portion of fruit for a handful of nuts and also schedule legumes regularly.

CEREALS, BREAD AND SIDE DISHES

Carbohydrates provide our body with energy. Therefore, four portions of cereal products (bread, potatoes, rice or even pasta) supplement the healthy diet plan per day. The best way to use whole grains in cereals is to provide important fiber.

MILK AND DAIRY PRODUCTS

In addition, three portions of milk or dairy products should be on the menu. They contain calcium, B vitamins and protein, which is very important for the body. If you get digestive problems due to lactose (lactose), you still don’t have to do without dairy products: firstly, there are whole supermarket shelves full of lactose-free products today, and secondly, some long-ripened cheeses such as Gouda, Mozzarella or Camembert contain little lactose by nature.
